This is my take on the January’s ScrawlrBox challenge "Starlet" and my thoughts on the provided art supplies.

ScrawlrBox January 2018 - Starlet

I don’t draw people, instead I was thinking of a nebula in which astronomical stars are born. When I finished this piece I realised it looked like a compass. I guess all new born stars, regardless if it's a chunk of gas or a human being, will need some guidance through life in this galaxy. I also made a speedpaint for this one (my first ScrawlrBox speedpaint actually). Head over to my youtube channel to check it t out.

Supplies in the box

  • Twin Tip Magic Marker
  • Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil
  • Bass Bullet Sharpener
  • Edding 1800 Profipen Drawing Pen 0.1
  • Silvine A5 Field Sketch Book

My thoughts on the supplies

The Twin Tip Magic Markers works just fine on their own but they don’t blend very well together. At least not on the paper supplied in the box.

The Palomino Blackwing 602 Pencil looks very nice. It has some golden details on it and a pink eraser at the end. The combination of pink and gold are beautiful and I got super inspire when I first open the box and saw it! However, the usage of the pencil isn’t as good. Not for sketching anyway. It smudges quite easy and will create a mess on the paper. The eraser isn’t very good either.

The Bass Bullet Sharpener is my absolute favourite supply in this box! I really love the look and feel of it. The sharpener has a bit of a weight to it which makes it feel super robust, and the golden colour really adds to the overall impression. The performance is as good as any sharpener. It will do its job well, as long as you have a sharp blade on it (which you can replace when needed).

The Edding 1800 Profipen Drawing Pen 0.1 is quite nice. The 0.1 tip is great for details, and the ink is smudge-proof.

The Silvine A5 Field Sketch Book isn’t well suited for markers since the paper will absorb the colours/ink and bleed through. The paper is better suited for pencil drawings, I believe.
